Fluke and Stumptown Comics Fest bound!

FLUKE is right around the corner, so for anyone in the Athens area, come to my table and get your hands on the first issue of Blacked OUT and Jetpack Shark Volume One. You can get them for three dollars a piece! A total deal, and I’ll sign them and doodle something on them for you like a jetpack shark cowboy. So, if you’re at FLUKE look for the Jetpack Shark  banner, and you’ll find me AND comics to enjoy and possibly purchase!

Blacked OUT #1 and Jetpack Shark Volume One: Three dollars a piece!

And, right after FLUKE, I’ll be headed out to the Portland area to peddle my comics to people on the west coast! So, stop by, say hey, and check out the comics. AND to celebrate the Blacked OUT’s first issue, I’ll give you a new preview of the insides (check out the earlier post for the first four pages)!

Also, I’ve added a new page to the website: Illustrations! I’ve posted six drawings over there, so enjoy those. I’ll be adding more drawings and removing some that I’m less proud of as that area of the website gets more illustrations added to it. Mostly, brush illustrations, but there’s a bunch of quill drawings that I’ll be scanning and posting soon.

And lastly, I’ll be researching options for a store, so that those of you unable to get to Athens on the 21st for FLUKE or get to Stumptown Comics Fest on the 28th and 29th will be able to purchase these comics from me directly or somewhere else on the internet!

Jetpack Shark… reviewed!

I know it’s been awhile, but I’ve been busy crafting various comics and illustrations, especially with an impending graduation on the horizon. But, I’m proud to say that my Jetpack Shark mini comic got reviewed recently by three great mini comic review sites, and the mini sold pretty well at MegaCon in Orlando, which was a blast. But, let’s get into it!

The first review was done by Justin over at Thirteen Minutes. He does a lot of great reviews of all sorts of comics, and you can tell that he’s certainly well versed in the world of comics. The Jetpack Shark mini was reviewed by Justin over at The Poopsheet Foundation (which is a great stomping grounds for all things mini comics), and you can check out his review here: Poopsheet review.

The second review was done over at Optical Sloth, which is another great site for mini comic reviews and a great way to expose yourself to some new creators and comics out there. So, check out the Jetpack Shark review.

The third review was by Rob Clough over at High-Low. He’s got a lot of informative reviews on all sorts of mini comics, and the thing that I really enjoy is that he often groups several similar comics in his review posts, which makes for some fun comparisons and gives you other similar thematic works to look at. Read the Jetpack Shark review over there!

So, I’m thrilled to have been reviewed, and I gotta say, it makes me more excited to get the next mini comic out there. Blacked OUT issue 1 is almost complete, and I’ll have an announcement about that soon. I’ll also be looking into getting a place to sell my mini comics on the internet, perhaps Etsy, so for those of you that want the mini comic, but are unable to get to Portland or Athens, can purchase them directly from myself.

In the next week or two, I’ll be adding an illustration section to the website with a whole bunch of new images. More stuff soon!

Upcoming Convention Schedule for 2012!

My upcoming convention schedule is as follows:

Feb 17th – 19th: MegaCon in Orlando, FL

Apr 21st: Fluke in Athens, GA

Apr 28th + 29th: Stumptown in Portland, OR

While the list is rather small at the moment, I’ll be updating it as I decide which additional conventions to attend. But the three listed, I have tables at and will be there! Or dead, but most likely there, sitting at a table trying to sell people comic goodness. And since, the list is so tiny, I’ll go ahead and comment a little on each convention, and why you should track me down and see me there!

MegaCon!

This was the first convention I ever tabled at last year, and unbeknownst to me, it would be the birthplace for Jetpack Shark. I created that jetpack-wearing, nazi-killing shark on a whim for a periodic heroes update, and turned the doodle into a comic. So, I’ll be proudly debuting: JETPACK SHARK VOLUME ONE. I’m almost done with it, just one more image to get draw, and then I’ll be printing it out. I’m not sure the price yet, but it’ll be 20 pages, and under five buck depending on the cost of printing. So, look for a jetpack shark banner, and buy the comic from the guy with the silly beard (me). I’ll be sketching and such too, so don’t be shy! Also, I’ll be tabling again with recent father and all around talented and page churning Phillip Sevy. If it’s half as fun as last year, it’ll still be an amazing time. I highly recommend going to MegaCon, if you’re remotely close to the Orlando area.

FLUKE

I’ve heard so many positive experiences from everyone that’s gone to Fluke in the past, that I have to go now. Especially, when I found out they got a bar and everything in the con. Beer and comics? You know I’m on board. I should also have either a Blacked OUT mini comic or a Sydney Sage mini comic to be selling alongside Jetpack Shark Volume One by this convention. I believe I will be tabling with the talented Emi Gennis. As she’s a seasoned Fluke attendant and will point me to the bar. Also, check out her website and enjoy some morbid and intense stories about people dying in all sorts of ridiculous ways, like via bear.

Stumptown Comics Fest

I’m really excited to be attending Stumptown. I feel pretty humbled and honored to be selected to table, and it’ll not only my first west coast convention, but the furthest west I’ve ever been, so yeah. It’ll be a blast. I’ll have a bunch of mini comics and such to sell, maybe some t-shirts or random merchandise in addition to my typical comics to sell. Emi Gennis will be sitting at my table as well, with a whole bunch of Spaz! comics, so yeah, buy our stuff and hang out with us in Portland. Neither one of us has any experience in the Portland area, so some recommendations of places to drink/eat and things to do would be greatly appreciated.

Blacked OUT

So, I’ve been busy on a variety of comic book endeavors over the past two months, working on scripts for a few different graphic novels that I’m hoping will one day see the light of day. In terms of drawing, I’ve been working steadily on my thesis project for my MFA degree which is a graphic novel that I’m hoping to finish a good chunk of it in the next several months. The project is an exciting one for me, as it tackles subject matter close to my heart, namely drinking and destruction. The title of the book is Blacked OUT, and it follows the main character Gus as he discovers that he becomes more powerful the more drunk he becomes. I’m too enthusiastic about this to sit on it forever, so I’ll go ahead and share the opening scene with you. I’ll try to keep this site more regularly updated with progress, comic pages, and illustrations in the future. But, in the meantime, enjoy some Blacked OUT!

Done with brush, quill, and technical pens.

Sydney Sage: No Cigar!

Sydney Sage returns to tackle another extermination job too tough for the regular guys to handle. This job brings Sydney into the depths of the city sewage system. Inked with brush, tech pens, and quill.

Halloween Comic Goodness!

A four page comic that I did for a Halloween anthology put together by Phillip Sevy. You can click on the link to see the other comics on the site, and they’ll be updating through Halloween, so keep checking in for more free comics by other talented individuals. I really enjoyed inking page three in particular…

One hell of a mess.

The first to pages of my noir comic in progress. It’ll be about 18 pages in total. These were done with brush, technical pens, and some quill for lettering.

The Exploits of Sydney Sage: Exterminator

The first Sydney Sage comic, where our heroine is put to the test against a specialized clan of ninjas! Done with pencils, brush, and quill.

Under some serious construction!

Just started up my website, which will be the new home for all my comic creations. So bare with me as I go through the learning process and get the website up and fully functional with a lot of comic pages, some illustration work, and some random ramblings. Thanks, and stay tuned for the comics!

-Max!
